SKF

Situated opposite the R21 on the Eastern boundary, and the Jet Park lake on the Western boundary, the recently constructed new head office and workshop facility for SKF stands on top of the same land that Fraser Alexander once occupied. Construction, having commenced on the on the 4th February 2019 was recently completed on the 24th February 2020, with SKF taking occupation thereafter. Designed by ICM Architects, the building sports a modern curved louvre on the front façade overlaid by a particularly contrasting angled off-shutter concrete roof slab which adds a defining feature to the office block that one can easy identify on the way to O.R Tambo International Airport if you are travelling that way. The facility also comprises a new workshop and warehouse facility.

MBSA PAINTLINE

Abbeydale was appointed to undertake this turnkey design and build Paint-Shop project for Mercedes Benz in East London. The benefits of the turnkey allowed Abbeydale to deliver a fast-track project with a single point of accountability, as such managing the risks through our proven track record. Every Mercedes requires a quality paint job, with our building being an integral stop on their way to becoming a driveable W206-generation C-Class Sedan, before being exported to 80 international markets.

The paint shop sees the completed body rolled into a 200m-long airtight tunnel where it starts an hour-and-a-half-long multi-step painting process.

The plant builds over 500 C-Class units every 24 hours and boasts state-of-the-art technologies identical to what is used for constructing the S-Class in Germany. This works out to one completed sedan rolling through the doors roughly every 3 minutes.

HOBART SHOPPING CENTRE

The expansion and construction of Hobart Shopping Centre was done in phases, over a seven-year period by the team at Abbeydale. Phase 1 started in 2010 and took 15 months to complete. During this time, dedicated Abbeydale team members ensured that the shopping centre was future proofed for further expansion over the years to come.

Five years later, Phase 2 started and the expansion included an additional 4 000 m2 for both parking and retail space. To avoid any inconvenience to retailers and shoppers, work was completed in various stages and the centre traded as normal during the construction.Stage 1 involved construction of the retail centre, whereas Stage 2 was a combination of demolition and construction. The old Total garage was flattened and replaced with the company’s ‘new-look’ garage, which includes a Mugg and Bean and a Thrupps express store.

Efficient Engineering

This project was the conclusion of a consolidation phase – and allowed all of Atlas Copco’s business units to be under one roof.

The building is broken up into several areas and features a 4-storey 6 000m2 office block for executive and administration use, three different operational offices at 500m2 each, a staggering 10 000m2 warehouse and an 8 500m2 workshop.

As a world-leading provider of sustainability productivity solutions, it was important that Atlas Copco have enough space for materials and machinery. As such, 28 000m2 of concrete hardstands hold assembled plants and equipment, while an additional 21 000m2 is dedicated to paved roads and parking.

We are proud to acknowledge the Abbeydale team, who completed this project in record time – despite experiencing challenging weather conditions during the foundation and layerwork phase.

Arrow Business Park
(Nile and Bathu)

Client: Abbey Properties (Pty) Ltd

Project Value: R107.5 million excl vat

Completed: March 2024

Design philosophy:
Nile’s hub operates 24 hours a day and can handle up to 2 500 tonnes of agricultural commodities daily. Functioning as both a cross-dock facility for online produce sales and a staging cold room for retail suppliers, it ensures the seamless flow of produce to 40 towns and cities across 10 countries in Africa. Nile’s dedication to quality and efficiency is evident in the hub’s infrastructure. Four different temperature zones optimise the cold chain, enhancing the shelf life of fresh produce. The “just in time” system allows producing to be staged for an average of 8 hours before transhipment, ensuring freshness and quality are maintained throughout the journey.

Entrepreneur and founder of sneaker brand Bathu Shoes, Theo Baloyi, reflects true black excellence. The new 12 000 m² warehouse and P-Grade offices were developed by Abbeydale for Bathu Shoes.

Abbeydale Park
