A redevelopment of the uncovered aging school swimming pool into a world class aquatic centre. The 2,750sqm covered yet naturally ventilated centre includes two pools for swimming and waterpolo plus a learn-to-swim facility. Surrounding the pools is seating including the original retained 1927 entrance, plus new double storey block housing the changing areas, upper viewing platform and plant rooms. The entire centre is covered by an intricate feature roof incorporating concrete and steel materials to produce a sleek exposed design for the 40m clear span.

The Abbeydale team both constructed and project managed this turnkey development for GRW. The building – that features a workshop, paint shop, wash bay, showroom, offices and an impressive 22 000m2 yard – encompassed the complete range of tanker and trailer requirements for this transport equipment designer and manufacturer.

World-class hydraulic lifts were installed in the lift pit bases to the workshop bays – a standout feature in this building.

More than 8 000m3 of concrete was used during construction. The majority of this had an off-shutter finish to compliment the glass façade, which showcases a modern showroom as the ‘face’ of GRW to the N12 highway.

Design philosophy:
Developed due to the continued growth in inbound and outbound volumes, coupled with the accelerated rise of cross border e-commerce. The new facility make use of a drive-in model, maximising productivity and increasing the volume of shipments processed daily to ensure faster delivery of shipments for customers. The facility will receive, process and transport inbound and outbound shipments to their intended destinations. The development will include an increase in floor space and advancements in technology and processes as well as Material Handling Equipment, which will omit manual handling of shipments and facilitate direct loading of shipments.

Design philosophy:
The new facility in Waterfall includes
7 000m² of P-Grade offices, together with
31 000 m² of warehouse space which includes 11 000m² of specialised VNA (very narrow aisle) warehousing. Full heigh single lift in-situ concrete columns were cast to 14m. A combination of large panel fibre surface beds to FM2 specification together with DM1 floors that were cast in-house by Abbeydale
